Quickstart on prototyping with wireframes

29 Nov

I’ve always believed that work should be fluid. For example, when I’m looking at a visual specification I want to be able to press the title of a news and go to that news article page specification instead of having to scroll to it.
The following video shows you how to create a click-able prototype with Adobe inDesign. Basically what happens is you create buttons and behaviors on inDesign and export it as a Swift (.swf) file. You can than open the SWF file on your browser and navigate through the different pages by clicking on the buttons you created.

Which search engine has better click through rate

24 Nov

Google Analytics still does a lousy job at filtering click information such and the source from where the visitor that clicked on AdSense came from, number of clicks, etc.

My first goal was to isolate website mediums so I turned to some PHP and decided to show ads only to visitors coming from a given site: Bing, Yahoo and Google.
For this I used PHP HTTP Referer variable.
I ran this 1 week for each search engine, and came up with the following results:

Search Engine Clicks

As you can see, Bing has the best CTR of all 3 followed by Yahoo and in last place Google.
Techcrunch as written an article on this subject called Are Bing Users Twice As Likely To Click On An Ad Than Google Users?. This study was backed up by Chitika and that meaning it’s United States and Canada based so if you are from another country like myself where Yahoo represents only 5% of search traffic and Bing somewhere from 10 to 15% I advise you to make a case study before making any assumptions.

On Chitika’s study it’s pointed out that Bing users click around 50% more on ads than Google users and 20% more than Yahoo! users.

Here’s the table from Techcrunch:

impressions clicks CTR % more clicks (Bing)
Google 26,929,367 260,518 0.97% 55.11%
Yahoo! 3,157,648 39,008 1.24% 21.47%
Bing 2,236,366 33,558 1.50%
Total 32,323,381 333,084 1.03%

Reading this data you have to be aware of one particular variable. Google is by far the best traffic source sending somewhere around 70 – 90% of traffic and Bing is somewhere around 8-15% of traffic to websites thus making Google achieve a worse CTR but from a much larger network explaining why the Click Through Rate is so low.

On the other hand Bing has, without a doubt, better CTR quality than any of the other search engines. From much less traffic came much more susceptible ad clicking visitors. I guess all doubts about optimizing websites for Bing have been shredded right now.

How Twitter and Facebook will revolutionize the mobile industry

14 Nov

The first website I visited was Twitter and I was excited, I logged in and I was able to tweet and see the tweets of people I follow but unfortunately I was not able to see the links they shared in conditions since they have no mobile version. It was really frustrating waiting over 5 minutes for a page to load and just to get a message saying “Memory is full” when I tried to access Abduzeedo.com

Fortunately some websites like Smashing Magazine have a mobile version of their website and I was able to read an article, many other websites have great designs, awesome content but lack on mobile support.

Twitter is already accessed via mobile by thousands of users and provides a valuable service to many businesses.
Facebook is the World most active community with a strong base to develop new applications and capitalize on their own market. Mobile applications and businesses based on mobile web design and application development are already a reality.

As the mobile web, social websites and services grow I believe that mobile versions of websites will be a must in about 5 years time, maybe less depending on technological breakthroughs. It took
It’s time for bloggers and businesses to start thinking, testing and creating mobile experiences and improving their user / customer experience when accessing their services or websites through mobile devices.

Cameron Moll’s book Mobile Web Design is a very interesting reading and I truly recommend it to any front-end web developer. You can grab a preview sample of Mobile Web Design.

Motivation & Marketing

08 Nov

Motivation

My co-worker Susana Vilaça published her 1st post on her new blog called What drives you? – motivation theories which talks about motivation techniques implemented in business that have been scientifically proven wrong but are still being implemented on current business management. The video it about 20 minutes long and presented by Daniel Pink at TED Talks.

Marketing

One other video I found very interesting is a marketing campaign created by BBDO Argentina using an iPhone, voice to text recognition and Twitter.
This innovative marketing campaign allowed thousands of people to interact, cheer, share opinion and follow the racers throughout the race.

Using an iPhone strapped to their arms and an earphone, simply by pressing a button, the runners were able to share their experiences with the world in real time. The voice message was turned into a text message that was automatically published at thehumanrace.com.ar/envivo/, in their Twitter accounts, and banners on sports vertical portals and news sites.
